USU Professor killed in Valley View crash

A prominent Utah State University professor was killed in a traffic crash last night on State Road 30, commonly known as the Valley View Highway. Utah Highway Patrol reports state Mary E. Doty was driving westbound just after 5:30 p.m. when a truck driven by 18-year old Benjamin A. Lundberg of North Logan, crossed the center lane and struck Doty’s vehicle. Reports state Doty was killed on impact. Lundberg reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. He was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Logan Regional Hospital. He was then transferred by Air Ambulance to the University of Utah Hospital in critical condition. Both victims were wearing their seat belts, though UHP Lt. Lee Perry said the impact of the crash was so high, that unfortunately didn’t make a difference for Doty. Perry said there was no warning for Doty that the other vehicle was coming into her lane, and there was no evidence of braking on the ground to indicate that Lundberg knew he was about to crash. “He’s lucky to be alive in all reality,” Perry said regarding Lundberg and the severity of the crash. Doty was the Director of the Counseling Center at USU and a Mental Health Member of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team, which debriefs and works with officers and EMS workers involved in critical incidents. Citations or arrests regarding the accident are pending investigation.
