MC drops thriller to Lone Peak

High school football fans were treated to a nailbiter in Hyrum Friday night, as Mountain Crest lost a close one to Lone Peak, 23-20. Knights quarterback Tannon Pedersen threw a dramatic 73 yard touchdown pass to Chase Lindsley with just over a minute left in the game to cap a come from behind win for the 5A school. The touchdown pass was the exclamation point on a stellar night for the senior, as he completed 19 of 22 pass for 339 yards and three scores.”Lone Peak made plays and kept battling. When it came down to the end, they made the plays and we didn’t,” Mountain Crest head coach Mark Wootton said after the game.Mountain Crest was led offensively by senior running back Alex Knowles. The versatile Knowles notched a hat trick for the Mustangs as he rushed for a touchdown, passed for a touchdown, and recieved a touchdown. “Alex Knowles is a great kid,” said Wootton. ” He came out very determined this year. He is a kid that makes you want to stay coaching.”Quarterback Alex Kuresa also had a big night, throwing 15 for 29 attempts and one touchdown. He completed many key third down passes, and also contributed by rushing the football.However, Mountain Crest shot themselves in the foot as they amounted three turnovers and numerous penalty yards. Kuresa and Knowles both fumbled, and Lone Peak also picked off a pass. After the Mustangs scored on a 20 yard run by Knowles to go up 20-16 with 9:42 left in the game, both teams swapped punts before Lone Peak scored the go-ahead touchdown. Following the 73 yard score, Mountain Crest had the ball around their own 20 yard line with 1:08 remaining on the clock. All hopes of a Mustang comeback where ended when Kuresa threw an interception to Knights linbacker Kyson Flake with 34 ticks left. Pedersen took a knee to end the game.The Mustangs will now turn their attention to East High, whom they will host next Friday at 7 pm. The Leopards played East Jordan Friday night in their home opener.
