OGDEN, Utah – Utah State’s volleyball team lost its first match of the 2009 season to Gonzaga in five sets (25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 21-25, 8-15) in the second day of competition at the Best Western Canyon Pines Weber State Invitational held here Saturday. USU is now 1-1 on the season with the loss.Sophomore opposite side hitter Emily Kortsen (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) had a season-high 12 kills and eight digs for Utah State, and hit .229 (12-4-35) in the match. Junior middle blocker Shantell Durrant (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) posted a career-high 10 kills and tied her career-high with five blocks while hitting .333 (10-3-21) for USU, and junior libero Christine Morrill (Neola, Utah/Union HS) had a season-high 24 kills to go along with two service aces.Layne Brosky had a match-high 18 kills and hit .371 (18-5-35) to pace Gonzaga, while Michelle Boevers had 13 kills and 11 digs, and Kaprina Goodwin added 10 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks, and hit .500 (10-1-18) for the Bulldogs.Both teams played well offensively in the first set as Utah State hit .361 (17-4-36) and Gonzaga hit .385 (14-4-26). The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the second set as it hit .259 (13-6-27) and limited USU to a .030 (9-8-33) hitting percentage. The Aggies responded in game three and hit .156 (12-7-32), but GU controlled the final two sets hitting .211 (13-5-38) in the fourth set and .095 (6-4-21) in the fifth set, while USU hit .020 (12-11-49) and negative .208 (3-8-24) in the final two sets.Utah State managed to hit just .086 (53-38-174) in the match as compared to a .204 (56-27-142) hitting percentage for Gonzaga. The Bulldogs also had 19 more digs (68-49) and five more team blocks (17-12) in the match, while USU had two more service aces (8-6) and one more service error (7-6).Utah State will conclude play in the Best Western Canyon Pines Weber State Invitational Saturday night as it plays Utah Valley at 5 p.m.
