Seven people are running for two four-year seats on the Providence City council now that Jared Jensen has withdrawn his candidacy. Jensen pulled out of the race Monday saying he may run in he future but this was not the best time for him to do so. The seven candidates will appear at a forum tonight in the Providence Elementary School Gymnasium. People will have an opportunity to mingle with the candidates and ask individual questions beginning at 6:30 pm at assigned candidate tables. A candidate forum will begin at 7 pm with Jason Williams of KVNU’s “For the People” talk show serving as the moderator. The candidates are incumbent Kathy Baker, Dale Astle (who was appointed to the council to replace Trent Rasmussen), Dee Barnes, Don Calderwod, Ralph Call, Carrie Kirk and Wendy Simmons (who previously served on the council). Early voting starts today and Providence City Recorder Scarlett Bankhead says Jensen’s name may be on some ballots until new ones have been re-printed. The four council candidates getting the most votes in the Primary election will advance to the November general election. There are two candidates for mayor, current councilmember Ronald Liechty and Lance Campbell.
