Teen leads cops on chase Friday night

A 17-year-old Smithfield teen suspected of driving while drunk led police officers on a chase from Logan to Smithfield Friday night and ended when the teen’s truck crashed into another vehicle on Main Street. The chase started at about 2500 North and Main Street after a motorist contacted police to report a truck driving erratically. The teen refused to yield to officers as he continued driving northbound on U.S. Highway 91. Once he entered Smithfield, the teen started driving on back roads at speeds of up to 60 mph, ignoring stop signs and running red lights as he weaved across town attempting to evade officers. The chase ended when the teen’s truck crashed into another truck at 100 N. Main in Smithfield. There were no major injuries in the crash, but the teen was transported to the Logan Regional Hospital to be evaluated. He will likely be charged with a range of criminal counts including drunk driving and evading.
