Playground dream now a reality

Bells rang and kids squealed as they ventured into a treehouse, castle, a pirate ship with a swing deck and a variety of exciting slides. That was only minutes after the six-day build of Adventure Playground on the Whittier Community Center ground was completed.Whittier Executive Director Kendall Andelin said there was only one word he could think of to describe his emotions. “Overwhelming,” Andelin said. “To see all the volunteers that turned out, we had almost 3000 volunteers who gave of their time and built this in six days.”Andelin says all the hard work has paid off and his emotions are still running high. “So excited,” he said. “It’s so nice. I’ve been out there to the site a couple of times over the weekend. To hear the kids playing, it’s music to my ears, so many of them out there in the park.”A lot of the volunteers have come back with their families to see the completed work and visited with each other. A lot of friendships were formed when they built the park.”He said, amazingly, enough volunteers turned out and came together in volunteering their time and energy to build Adventure Playground in just six days. The playground finished less than an hour past its intended finishing goal. Andelin not only thanked all the volunteers who came together, but also all the sponsors and donations that have come in over the past few years to make this accessible playground a reality.
