Providing opportunities for the disabled

Common Ground Outdoor Adventures is hosting its annual “Reach for the Stars” fundraiser on Thursday, October 22nd starting at 6:30 p.m. at the new Riverwoods Convention Center in Logan.Common Ground is a non-profit organization that provides outdoor recreation for people with disabilities. New program director David Kriner has worked in similar programs for more than 20 years and he says often it’s the only outdoor recreation a participant has been able to experience.”I skied with a little guy, he was 11 years old,” Kriner explains. “He came up with the school program. He was a paraplegic. So this was the first outing that he had with his peers of a physical activity.”The first day he just took off. To see his eyes and everything light up, for the first time in his life he was physically equal or superior to his peers.”Kriner says it greatly increases a participant’s self confidence and self esteem and also brings rewards to the volunteer. “Reach for the Stars” will feature dining, live music, silent and live auctions and raffles. All proceeds will help Common Ground obtain adaptive equipment to complete their mission. For information or reservations call 713-0288.
