Utah State volleyball defeats Utah Valley in five sets

OREM, Utah ­ Emily Kortsen recorded her third double-double in her last fourmatches with 12 kills and 10 digs to lead Utah State to a five-set win(25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 16-25, 15-10) here against Utah Valley Tuesday night. Utah State, who snapped a two-match losing steak with the win, improves to11-8 on the season and Utah Valley falls to 12-7 with the loss. USU lost toUVU earlier this year in a tournament hosted by Weber State in four sets. Kortsen, a sophomore opposite side hitter from Hollister, Calif., hit .387in the match (12-0-31) and had no attack errors during the night. Sophomoreoutside hitter Liz McArthur (St. George, Utah) had a team-high 19 kills togo along with 10 digs, while junior middle blocker Shantell Durrant(American Fork, Utah) had 10 kills and hit .471 (10-2-17). Junior liberoChristine Morrill (Neola, Utah) had a team-high 27 digs, while junior setterChelsea Fowles (Hollister, Calif.) added 12 digs and 51 assists. Kayli Broadbent had a match-high 23 kills to lead Utah Valley, while AllyceJones posted 35 digs. Utah State played very well in the opening set as it hit .225 (15-6-40) andlimited Utah Valley to a .048 hitting percentage (11-9-42). USU had abalanced attack in the first set as it got three kills apiece from Durrant,Fowles, Kortsen and McArthur. Utah Valley evened the match by winning the second set as it hit .282(17-6-39) as compared to a .200 (12-5-35) hitting percentage for USU.Chelsey Garfield had five kills to lead the home team in this set. Both teams played well in the third set as USU hit .237 (14-5-38) and UVUhit .154 (14-8-39). Kortsen and McArthur led the Aggies with four killsapiece here. Utah Valley evened the match with a convincing nine-point win in the fourthset as it hit .206 (14-7-34) and limited Utah State to a negative .053(6-8-38) hitting percentage. Broadbent had seven kills to lead theWolverines in the set. Utah State jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the fifth set and then scoredthe final three points to notch the five-point win as it hit .435 (11-1-23)and Utah Valley hit .240 (9-3-25). McArthur led USU in the final set as shehad six kills and hit .417 (6-1-12). Utah State finished the match with a .190 (58-25-174) hitting percentage andUtah Valley hit .179 (65-33-179). Both teams finished the match with justone service ace, while UVU had two more service errors (7-5). TheWolverines also finished the match with four more digs (75-71) and 2.5 moreteam blocks (13.0-10.5). Utah State will return to Western Athletic Conference play and host FresnoState (10-7, 3-2) on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. -USU-
