Man charged after bizarre kidnapping

An Ogden man has been arrested after he allegedly kidnapped his brand new co-worker in Pleasant View and drove him to Logan for what he said would be a 15 minute break. Pleasant View Police Chief Scott Jackson says 41-year-old Derek G. Valdez was training a temporary worker at the HC Brill commercial baking company Monday and he drove the 21-year-old Roy man to a nearby gas station. They purchased some drinks but instead of heading back to work, Valdez drove north on Interstate 15 and then into the Cache Valley. When they arrived in Logan about an hour later, Valdez stopped the car and allowed the younger man to go to the bathroom at the A & W Restaurant. The passenger ran inside, crying and upset, and told workers he had been kidnapped. The driver circled the restaurant, then drove away before police arrived. He was stopped in Preston, Idaho for pumping a tank of gas and leaving without paying for it. He was then let go but Valdez was picked up by Cache County Sheriffs deputies at about 11 p.m. as he passed back into Utah. Valdez has been charged with second degree felony kidnapping. Jackson says the passenger told him he was not threatened by Valdez who allegedly talked about a lot of problems in his life.
