Cache developer in "advanced" talks to buy large stake in Real Salt Lake

North Logan resident Dell Loy Hansen is poised to purchase 49 percent of the Real Salt Lake Major League Soccer team, according to various media reports. Tuesday night, The Salt Lake Tribune quoted a report from the business newspaper, “The Enterprise,” stating that Hansen, the owner of Logan-based Wasatch Property Management, was prepared to purchase 49 percent of the soccer franchise from Dave Checketts, who is involved in a bid to purchase the St. Louis Rams of the NFL. Hansen is known to be a fan of soccer, as in 2005 he was involved in a bid to build a $1.6 million indoor soccer facility in North Logan. Proposals for such a facility were to construct the building south of the George S. Eccles Ice Center, but Hansen later withdrew the proposal to build the facility. According to The Salt Lake Tribune, the discussions between Checketts and Hansen are “advanced” and the potential sale isn’t an indication that Real Salt Lake is in financial trouble. Later this week, Real Salt Lake will face the Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference semifinals. It’s the second consecutive year RSL has made the conference semifinals. If RSL defeats Chicago, they will play for the MLS Cup for the first time in their short history.
