A 36-year old Hyrum man is in jail following charges relating to attempted poisoning of his mother-in-law. Cache County Sheriff Lieutenant Matt Bilodeau says Robert W. Smith has special needs and investigators are taking his mental capacity into consideration in the case. Smith allegedly mixed rat poisoning with milk with the design to cause harm or death. His mother-in-law noticed the milk was blue and contacted authorities. Bilodeau says investigators found nearly two tablespoons of rat poison settled at the bottom of the milk carton. He says the poison acts as a blood thinner and would have to be consumed in large quantities to be fatal. Bilodeau says the mother-in-law said Smith has exhibited suspicious behavior in the past, but a motive in this case is not clear. Bilodeau says Smith is confined at the Cache County Jail with a no-bail status and has officially been charged with second-degree felony suspicion of surreptitious administration.
