A four month old North Logan child has died of severe injuries believed to be inflicted by his father, 36 year-old Francisco Martinez. North Park Police Sgt John Italisano says Jesus Yandel Martinez was pronounced dead at Primary Children’s Medical Center Sunday at 11:07 p.m. after life support was discontinued. Italisano says the infant was taken to Logan Regional Hospital Wednesday after an ambulance was called to 2500 North 300 East. From there the child was airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital and placed on life support. Italisano says doctors agreed the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome. “it’s kind of like the brain, according to the doctors, the brain being shaken inside the skull and there was some bleeding that was very, very recent,” Italisano said Monday. “By recent I mean probably around the time or just before the time the call came in.” Italisano says Francisco was arrested Friday and charged with second degree felony child abuse but those charges have now been upgraded to First Degree Abuse Homicide. He describes the child abuse as the worst anyone at North Park Police Department has seen. A hold has been placed on Francisco by Immigration officials.
