At the end of this month Fred Hunsaker is retiring from his job as Vice President for Business and Finance at Utah State University, for the third time. Hunsaker retired in December of 2003 but shortly after that he was asked to come back as interim Athletics Director for several months.Later he agreed to come back to his old job until his replacement could be found. Hunsaker says there were budget problems before he retired the first time but nothing like now .Hunsaker is co-chairman of the Budget Reduction Committee for USU and he says round four of cuts are underway and already $27.5 million have been cut.”What we have found is it’s just really difficult, this round four, to keep to the principles that we set early on,” Hunsaker says, “these guiding principles of protecting the students and making their programs available and not taking classes away from that they need to progress and do better in their work. It’s getting really difficult to do that.”Hunsaker won’t be through cutting budgets after he retires because he is the Republican State Representative in District Four. His replacement at USU is David Cowley, who has worked as his associate, a man Hunsaker says will do a great job.
