Hyrum man in jail after arson threat

A 39-year old Hyrum man is in jail facing 2nd degree felony aggravated arson, after it appears he was going to set his house on fire. Cache County Sheriff Lt. Chad Jensen says Jeffrey R. French called 911 New Year’s Eve, saying he had cut his wrists and fired several rounds throughout his house at 13 South 1100 East in Hyrum. Sheriff’s deputies responded and took French into custody without incident. Deputies entered the residence and found flammable liquid poured throughout the house and garage. They also found that several rounds French fired exited the home and hit surrounding houses. Fortunately no one was hurt, but Jensen says two deputies were taken to the hospital after they fell ill due to the strong fumes in the home. French was taken to the hospital for evaluation and upon release, was booked into the county jail on charges of arson, reckless endangerment, and possession of a weapon while intoxicated.
