A new landfill in Box Elder County came a step closer to reality on Tuesday when the county commissioners voted to rezone 2000 acres of property on Promontory Point as a municipal waste zone. According to the Box Elder News Journal, the change was requested by the Northwestern Band of Shoshone Nation who want to operate a landfill at that site. Following a public hearing, Community Development Director Kevin Hamilton said the zone change is the first step in the process and there will be a lot more engineering and plannng steps along the way with public input sought when an application for a conditional use permit is made. The corporation plans to create a waste-to-energy facility which creates energy from trash. The plan is to transport the waste to the site using the Union Pacific Railraod causeway.
