Rape investigation leads to money laundering scheme

Cache County Sheriff’s officials are investigating a Hyrum man who allegedly committed rape and money laundering crimes. Lt. Matt Bilodeau says it started when a 17-year old girl reported being raped by 30-year old Lamarr E. Washington. Bilodeau says as the investigation progressed, deputies found Washington’s car loaded with new merchandise. It appears that Washington, and 24-year old Claudia M. Zayas of Logan, were involved in a scheme where they’d have items shop-lifted, and then returned for store credit. The credit was then cashed out, bringing the money laundering charges. Bilodeau says the majority of the stores targeted were along the Wasatch Front. He says the case is still active and more charges are being brought against Washington. Meanwhile, Washington and Zayas were booked into jail earlier this week.
