Jared Quayle named WAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

LOGAN, Utah   Utah State men¹s basketball player Jared Quayle has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week it was announced by the league office Monday. Quayle was also named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week, which is voted on by a state media panel, for the period ending on Sunday, Jan. 17. It is the first time this year and second time in his career that Quayle has been awarded the league¹s top weekly honor. It is also the second time this year that USU has earned WAC Player of the Week accolades as junior forward Tai Wesley was honored on Dec. 28. As for USU Athlete of the Week honors, it is the second time this year and sixth time overall that Quayle has garnered USU¹s top weekly individual honor. Quayle, a 6-1 senior guard from Perry, Utah (Box Elder HS/Western Wyoming CC), led Utah State to a 3-0 record last week with home wins against Hawai¹i (98-54) and Boise State (81-59), and an overtime win at Nevada (79-72). His best game of the week was against Nevada as he scored 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and one steal in 42 minutes. Against the Wolf Pack, Quayle was 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. He also had 11 points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals against the Rainbow Warriors in just 22 minutes. He then finished his week with 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in just 28 minutes against the Broncos. For the week, Quayle averaged 14.0 points, 5.7 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, while shooting 55.2 percent from the field (16-29), 53.8 percent from three-point range (7-13) and was 3-of-3 at the free throw line. On the season, Quayle is averaging 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game, and is shooting 40.9 percent from the field, 43.4 percent from three-point range and 92.3 percent from the free throw line. He currently ranks first in the WAC and seventh in the nation in free throw shooting. He also ranks first in the WAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.18-to-1.00), is third in assists and sixth in three-point shooting. Utah State (13-6, 3-2) will continue WAC play this week with a pair of road games at Fresno State (10-9, 3-2) on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. (MT) and at Idaho (8-8, 1-4) on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. (MT). USU¹s game against the Bulldogs will be televised on ESPN¹s Full Court Package as well as Altitude (Comcast Ch. 61 in Cache Valley), while its game against the Vandals will be televised throughout the state of Utah on CW30. – USU –
