Salt Lake County Mayor and Democratic candidate for Governor Peter Corroon will be in Logan on Saturday. He will be the guest of honor at a reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Italian Place, 48 Federal Avenue in Logan.Cache County Democratic Party Chairman Vince Wickwar says everyone is invited to attend and get acquainted with what he called a “very strong candidate.”Corroon is calling on Republican Governor Gary Herbert to return a $10,000 campaign donation from a coal company, which got a fasttrack decision from state regulators on a strip mine. The governor says he had no role in the approval but Corroon says it’s about perception.”I think the best situation, at this point, would be for the governor to give back the money that he was given in this situation, have a review of the situation and be done with it,” Corroon says. “That way there’s no perception by the citizens that somehow he was influenced by money and his regulators were asked to do something quicker than they otherwise would have.”Corroon is pleased with recent actions by the Utah State Legislature to improve ethics reform, but feels like there are still some areas that need improvement.”I think the fact that ethics bills were passed is great,” Corroon says. “Unfortunately, I think there are some areas that I think that are missing.”Corroon believes there are specific areas of ethics reform that need to be addressed and some are included in this new bill passed by the State House of Representatives. “Campaign finance limits, which is included; a gift ban, which we don’t have a gift ‘ban’ but they did put significant limits so I think that’s important; elimination of elected officials being able to keep campaign contributions which I think is very important as well.”Whether or not an independent ethics commission is needed, Corroon believes that citizens should be involved in the process. Corroon was elected Salt Lake County Mayor six years ago and was re-elected in 2008 with 66 percent of the vote. In addition to attending the reception Saturday, Corroon will participate in the 23rd annual Chocolate Festival, a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood.
