Health Department warns against Spice

It is undoubtedly not true, a Facebook rumor that a legal drug called “Spice” has caused five deaths and 11 overdoses at a local hospital. That rumor cannot be substantiated, but on KVNU’s For the People program Tuesday night a Bear River Health Department professional warned against the use of the drug. It goes by such names as Pep Spice, Black Mamba, Ocean Breeze, Dragon and Bombay Blue. All of those brand names are basically synthetic marijuana. Brock Alder, Director of Treatment Services at the Health Department, says not much is known about the drug right now and although it is legal, he warns that the label says it’s not for human consumption. “With a lot of the other drugs, I mean there are so many things cut with who knows what, I think people that are into this kind of stuff just don’t plain think about it at all,” Alder said. “It doesn’t bother them. They are willing to take those risks to get that high.” Alder says some of the people the department sees have been using spice and it is apparently available locally.
