17-year-old involved in Feb. 1 crash dies Wednesday night

One of the 17-year-old boys involved in a fatal crash in Sardine Canyon earlier this month died Wednesday night in a Wasatch Front hospital.Michael B. Higley of Tremonton was a passenger in a 1991 Audi that was involved in the four-car crash that started when a Ryder delivery truck swerved into oncoming traffic and collided with a car, causing highway melee.Robert L. Smith, a 54-year-old Wellsville man, was killed instantly in the crash.Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry confirmed Thursday that Higley died sometime Wednesday night, but said the driver of the car Higley was in, 17-year-old Robert Watson of Garland, was recovering from the injuries he sustained in the crash.Perry said potential criminal charges against the driver of the Ryder truck, 36-year-old Jason Hernandez of Tooele, were still pending as officials waited for the results of blood work.”We’re just waiting for the blood results,” Perry said.The crash happened just after 5 p.m. on Feb. 1 on the northern end of Sardine Canyon near the “Big Curve.”
