The recently-organized Marine Corps League of Cache Valley has been named the Corporal Gerald Max Rich Detachment and organizer Michael Buist says membership is growing, not only among Marines but other veterans wanting to be associate members. Buist says members voted to name the local detachment for Corporal Rich, a native of Smithfield who enlisted in the Marine Corps just days before the Pearl Harbor Attack in 1941. He was killed in action in the Southwest Pacific theater of operations after earlier receiving numerous medals. The league is hosing a Commemoration of the flag raising on Iwo Jima on Tuesday, February 23rd starting at 7 p.m. in the Logan Senior Citizens Center, 240 North 100 East. Buist says the league is honored to have eight World War II veterans in the local detachment and five of these heroes were on Iwo Jima.
