Incumbent Senator Bob Bennett, R-UT, calls himself a conservative Republican. Some members of the so-called “Tea Party Movement,” however, say Bennett is not conservative enough. In a radio news conference Friday, Sen. Bennett was asked how he feels about the Tea Party Coalition. He said it has been very useful in waking people up to the fact that they should not be apathetic about politics.”If you look back in American history,” Sen. Bennett said, “we have had similar movements from time to time and they have always had a bracing effect on our politics. On the other hand, they usually recede. “In other words, unless they get themselves organized into a formal political party of some kind, once they’ve made their point and established their position they fade away and their followers end up in one of the two parties.”Sen. Bennett did say it is possible the movement could grow big enough that it forms a new political party.
