After playing their way into the state championship game with dramatic victories over Bountiful in overtime on Thursday and then besting perennial powerhouse Provo in the state quarterfinal Friday, the Mountain Crest Mustangs found themselves facing a familiar foe. The Mustangs squared off against the Timpview Thunderbirds Saturday at the Dee Events Center for the 4A State Boys Basketball championship, losing 55-43 to the same school Mountain Crest faced for the 4A State Football championship approximately four months ago. The outcome in both games turned out to be very similar. On Saturday, Timpview used a strong and efficient offense (shooting 63% in the second half) and a stout defense to frustrate Mountain Crest, particularly Matt Stewart who finished the night with seven points, well below his season average. Cal Hanks led Mountain Crest Saturday with 12 points. Eli Robison paced the T-birds with 16 points, with Josh Warner contributing 10. Not all the Mustangs walked away empty handed. Matt Stewart and Tyler Weese were named to the 4A All-Tournament Team.
