Utah accepting specialty crop grant applications

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food is seeking proposals for the federally funded Specialty Crops Block Grant Program.Specialty crops are defined as fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops.The grant is funded through the U.S. Farm Bill, which authorizes the U.S. Department of Agriculture to partner with states to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crop producers.The goal is to improve marketing, promotion, education, research, trade, and increase nutritional knowledge and consumption of specialty crops.In 2009, 19 projects were awarded a total $236,000. About $285,000 of grant money will be available this year.
