USU students getting help obtaining concealed weapon permits

Many people don’t realize that a person with a concealed weapon permit is allowed to have a gun on their person on the Utah State University campus.Dex Taylor, firearms instructor with the Department of Public Safety, and also a firearms instructor with the Logan City Police Department’s Reserve Division, has been training USU students on how to apply for a concealed weapons permit. He says the University of Utah tried to ban guns from its campus in years past, but eventually the Utah Supreme Court ruled that guns could not be banned of the owner had a permit. Taylor says the state’s Web site lists only four places where guns are banned, even if you have a concealed weapons permit. Those places are: Federal buildings; correction facilities and law enforcement buildings and mental health facilities; secure areas of airports, which means the areas beyond the metal detectors; and religious institutions where they have registered with the state to be gun free.
