This is the week to celebrate Health Days in Smithfield. Smithfield Health Days started in 1925 and each year the festivities are marked by additions and changes. Mayor Darrell Simmons says this year the first-ever Scholarship Fundraiser will be held when Craig Jessop and the American Festival Chorus perform on Thursday, May 6. Health Days chair Stacy Dority says the performance will be at Sky View High School starting at 7 p.m. The funds generated from the concert will go into a scholarship fund. “Also to this evening we have the winners of the Stratford Loosle competition,” Dority says. “So those youth that participate each year, the winners will be performing as the pre-show for the concert. So it’s going to be a great evening.” This year’s scholarship winners, chose from a field of 13, are Stephanie Bland, Melanie Buchanan, Jordan Rock, Malorie Sorenson and Elizabeth Wilkie. Tickets for the concert are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Events will take place each day with Monday’s focus on a family bike ride. Saturday is the big day when there will be activities going on all day including a parade, a Mountain Bike Challenge, horse show and a youth theater both Friday and Saturday evenings.
