Democratic candidate for Utah governor, Peter Corroon, hopes that reaching across the aisle to pick Republican Rep. Sheryl Allen as his runningmate will help close the gap between himself and Republican Governor Gary Herbert in this year’s special election. Corroon, the current Salt Lake County Mayor, visited Logan on Monday and said he is also hoping it will usher in a new era of bi-partisan cooperation.Corroon came to Logan to introduce his new runningmate and he said her credentials surpassed those of any other potential candidate. He told a cheering crowd that the Corroon-Allen team is excited and ready to go.”This is going to be a fun race, a tough race,” Corroon said on the steps of the Historic Cache County Courthouse. “But we’re going to put on our good sneakers. We’re going to work hard. “We’re going to bring some independence to the state of Utah, be a voice for citizens that oftentimes go unheard. We’re going to reach across the aisle. We’re going to work hand-in-hand together to make sure we represent all the citizens of Utah.”Allen said she too is extremely excited. When asked what the reaction has been among her Republican friends and colleagues, her answer was one word: “mixed.”A resident of Bountiful, Allen realizes she is a new entity.”When this gentleman held out his hand to me and said, ‘Will you be my runningmate?’ and ‘Let’s do so in a collaborative fashion’…that’s a voice that I wanted to share with the state of Utah,” Allen said. “I think our rhetoric is too harsh. I think we need to turn down that harsh rhetoric and turn up the caring. And that’s what Peter Corroon will allow us to do.”Corroon says that Allen shares his passion for education and other important issues. Corroon described his pick for Lt. Governor as a great educator, great legislator, the mother of four, grandmother of seven and wife of John Allen, the chief statistician for the Utah Jazz.
