Letter carriers looking for help to Stamp Out Hunger

This is a big weekend for Cache Valley’s postal workers. They are participating in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday, May 8, the largest one-day food drive in the nation. The food drive is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers.Logan Postmaster Brandon Roundy says local letter carriers hope to outdo last year’s record collection of more than 51,000 pounds of food for the Cache Community Food Pantry where the needs have gone up with the downturn in the economy. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Wednesday, the Postmaster says he is very proud of his employees”All the employees come together and we make this a great event,” Roundy said. “We have family members and friends that come in and help out with it. “Just to watch it unfold is amazing to see how many people donate. It really shows how generous people are in the valley.”Roundy says he will be out with his own family helping to make sure all the food gets to its destination. Local letter carrier and food drive coordinator Aaron Porter says last year donations totaled 51,673 pounds of food for the Cache Community Food Pantry. That amount earned the local group a number 10 on the most food collected for a branch this size in the nation. Porter says the goal this year is 60,000 pounds.”That’s just only about 8,327 pounds more than we need to reach our goal,” Porter says. “But to put that in perspective, the pantry serves right now on average about 125 families, which means they’re using close to 4,000 pounds plus of foods every week. “The food we’ll collect, and we hope to collect 60,000, will only feed them about 13-14 weeks.”Porter says letter carriers will be getting a lot of help from family and friends. He invites local residents to give generously and to leave food close to the mailbox on Saturday.Roundy says if people forget to leave their food by the mail box Saturday morning they can drop it off at the Logan Post Office lobby.
