Mosquito fogging to begin in valley

A new mosquito season has begun. Cache Mosquito Abatement District (CMAD) workers are checking areas of standing water for mosquito larvae and are finding high numbers present. Larvacide is being applied to attack the mosquitoes before they become airborne. “The recent spells of cooler than normal weather have helped to keep adult mosquito numbers down.” Said Terrie Wierenga, spokesperson for CMAD. She continued “However, it only takes a few days of warm weather for the larva to mature and become adults.” CMAD plans to fog in the evenings beginning Monday, May 24th. The schedule may change due to weather conditions; please check the website (www.cachemosquito.com) weekly. Monday: Petersboro, West Smithfield, Benson, Lewiston Tuesday: Newton, Cache Junction, Clarkston, Hyrum, Avon, Mendon Wednesday: north Wellsville, Benson, Nibley, Millville Thursday: Richmond, Cove, Amalga, Trenton, Cornish, south Wellsville, Mt. Sterling East Smithfield, Hyde Park, North Logan, and Providence will be fogged only when adult mosquito numbers are high or residents request fogging. Please call (435) 764-6839 to request service. All areas are being treated with larvacide, and traps are monitoring adult mosquito numbers. There are practical measures that citizens can take to help protect them from mosquitoes that might carry West Nile virus. o DRAIN standing water around your house since that is where mosquitoes lay eggs, including tires, flowerpots, bird baths, and clogged rain gutters. Trim grass and shrubs, and don’t over water. o DRESS in long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors between dusk and dawn to prevent bites. DUSK to DAWN is when the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus are active. o WEAR insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always follow label instructions for skin and clothes. For more information please visit www.cachemosquito.com or contact CMAD at 764-6839.
