Since an ordinance allowing alcohol to be sold on Sunday in Logan took effect June 2009, the Logan City Police have seen a significant decrease in total alcohol-related offenses, Police Chief Gary Jensen told the Logan Municipal Council during its meeting Tuesday. Total alcohol cases, including incidents, have “dropped relatively dramatically,” Jensen said. The alcohol-related arrests for 2009 are the lowest they’ve been in the past 5 years, though Jensen said he had expected to see an increase in incidents. “I can’t come to you and tell you (the Sunday beer sales ordinance) has been a problem for us,” Jensen told City Council Tuesday. Jensen said he doesn’t know exactly what the cause for the drop in offenses is, whether it’s economic-driven, related to the 2009 Sunday beer sales ordinance or a result of awareness following the death of USU freshman Michael Starks in 2008.
