A large fire reportedly involving hundreds of bales of hay burned into the early Thursday morning hours in Lewiston. The fire was reported at about 9:50 p.m. and was about a quarter mile west of U.S. Highway 91 on Cannibal Road in Lewiston. The road is about a mile north of the Pepperidge Farm plant in Richmond. Details about the blaze were unavailable immediately Thursday morning, but emergency radio traffic indicated that fire crews from the north end of Cache County and Franklin County were at the scene, and water tenders were being used at the scene due to the lack of fire hydrants in the area. A large column of smoke billowed up from the scene of the fire, drifting toward the south and giving a smell of smoke to the air in Richmond. The blaze could be seen from most areas on the north end of the valley and appeared to involve a very large stack of hay bales.
