Fire officials respond to successive fires

A fire Saturday morning destroyed a small hay barn and two personal watercraft adjacent to the barn at 686 South 50 East in Hyde Park. A nearby boat was also damaged by the fire. The approximately 15-by-20 foot building was fully involved when the first units arrived at about 9:30 a.m. Units from Smithfield, North Logan, Logan and the Cache County Fire District responded to the blaze that caused approximately $40,000 in damage. No one was injured. Smithfield Fire Chief Jay Downs says the exact cause of the fire has not been determined but he believes it was accidental. The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire. Just as that fire was being extinguished, another fire was reported at 86 East Center in Smithfield. Two engines from the Hyde Park fire were sent to Smithfield along with units from Logan and an officer from Richm, ond. The second fire was less serious in nature and it involved burnt food in the kitchen. Fire units helped blow smoke out of the home. Fire Chief Jay Downs applauded the professionalism displayed by all of the responding agencies to be able to break free from one fire to respond to another. He also expressed appreciation for the willingness and ability of neighboring agencies to help each other out.
