Draxler feels new money for schools undoes federalism

Governor Gary Herbert has decided to apply for the $101 million in federal money for schools but one local lawmaker says the governor actually had no other choice. District Three Republican State Rep. Jack Draxler says President Barack Obama’s Education Jobs Bill completely undoes the principle of federalism because if the governor rejects the money it will be distributed to other entities in the state.Draxler says there are catch 22’s all over the place.”We accept this $101 million, send it out to our districts and when that money runs out in a year what do we have to do?” Draxler asks. “Well, either the state has to step up and replace that money or face the prospect of cutting the education budget.”Although this federal money will not increase the national debt, Draxler says some of it comes from the Defense Department budget and he does not feel good about that.
