LOGAN, Utah Junior outside hitter Liz McArthur registered 11 kills to go along with a career-high five service aces to lead Utah State to a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-19, 25-16) against Weber State here Tuesday night in its home opener. USU improves to 3-0 on the season with the win and WSU falls to 0-4 with the loss. For Utah State, the 3-0 mark is its best start to the season since the 2005 team began the year with four straight wins. McArthur (St. George, Utah) added eight digs and four block assists for Utah State in the match, while senior middle blocker Katie Astle (Sandy, Utah) had seven kills, four block assists and hit .600 (7-1-10). Senior setter Chelsea Fowles (Hollister, Calif.) added four kills, six digs and 28 assists, while sophomore opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) added four kills and hit .500 (4-1-6). Bethany Wray had a match-high 15 kills to lead Weber State, while Nina Blake recorded 13 digs. Utah State scored the first six points of the match and led 10-3 before Weber State rallied to tie it at 12-all. USU then scored the next four points to regain control of the set en route to the eight-point win. USU hit .182 (11-5-33) in the first set as compared to a .143 (9-5-28) hitting percentage for WSU. Utah State jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in set two only to see Weber State rally once again and eventually take a 15-14 lead. The Aggies responded by scoring four straight points and went on to notch the six-point win. In the second set, USU hit .259 (11-4-27) and WSU hit .086 (12-9-35). In the third and final set, Utah State built an early 12-4 lead and was never really challenged as it coasted to the nine-point win and three-set sweep. In the final set, the Aggies hit .394 (18-5-33) and the Wildcats hit .118 (10-6-34). Utah State finished the match with a .280 (40-14-93) hitting percentage and Weber State hit .113 (31-20-97). USU also had six more digs (40-34), 5.5 more team blocks (8.5-3.0) and five more service aces (7-2) in the match. Utah State will travel to Tempe, Ariz., this weekend to compete in the Arizona State hosted Sheraton Classic along with San Diego State (3-0) and Seattle University (2-1). USU will begin the tournament on Friday, Sept. 3 with matches against SDSU and SU at 11 a.m. (MT) and 6 p.m. (MT), respectively. Utah State will then conclude the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 4 against the host Sun Devils (1-2) at 2 p.m. (MT). -USU-
