Lewiston school one of two receiving national achievement awards

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Two Utah elementary schools have been recognized with a national award for student academic achievement.The Salt Lake Tribune reported Upland Terrace Elementary School, in Salt Lake City, and Lewiston Elementary, in Lewiston, were named Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.To earn the honor, schools must be among the highest-performing on state tests. Schools with a high number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds can also qualify by improving test results.At Lewiston, 94 percent of students were proficient in language arts in 2009. Eighty-nine percent of students were proficient in math.At Upland Terrace students, 92 percent were proficient in language arts and 90 percent were proficient in math.
