N. Utah man complete Great Salt Lake swim

PROMONTORY POINT, Utah (AP) — A northern Utah man celebrated his recent birthday with a salty long-distance swim in the Great Salt Lake. The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports Mike Stephens, of Roy, completed a nearly two-and-a-half mile swim from Promontory Point to Fremont Island in one hour and 15 minutes. The newspaper spoke with Stephens before and after he plunged into the lake Friday. It was both Stephens’ 48th birthday and the anniversary of the first visit surveyor John C. Fremont made to the island on Sept. 10, 1843. Stephens began the swim at 5 p.m. Family rowed alongside in a canoe and a friend had a rescue boat on standby. Stephens’ says his family celebrated his safe arrival on the island with cupcake, candles and a chorus of “Happy Birthday to You.”
