LOGAN, Utah – Junior outside hitter Liz McArthur recorded 22 kills to lead Utah State to a five-set win (25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 22-25, 16-14) against Loyola Marymount Friday morning in the first match of the 2010 Utah State Invitational. Utah State improves to 11-0 on the season with the win, tying the 1979 AIAW National Runner-up team for the third-best start to a season in school history. The 1978 AIAW National Championship team holds the school record as it won its first 26 matches. Loyola Marymount falls to 4-6 on the year with the loss. McArthur (St. George, Utah) added seven digs for Utah State and hit .255 (22-9-51) in the match, while sophomore outside hitter Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) posted her first career double-double as she finished with 12 kills and a career-high 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Katie Astle (Sandy, Utah) had seven kills and hit .700 (7-0-10), while senior setter Chelsea Fowles had five kills, 12 digs, three blocks and three service aces, and hit .625 (5-0-8). Utah State’s back row once again played well as sophomore libero Laurel Bodily (Idaho Falls, Idaho) posted a career-high 14 digs, while senior libero Christine Morrill (Neola, Utah) added 13 digs and a career-high seven assists. Jasmine Rankins had 18 kills and Alyse Hensley finished the match with 13 kills to lead Loyola Marymount. Utah State began the match by scoring six of the first nine points and later used a 6-2 run before finishing the set with four unanswered points en route to the nine-point win. USU hit .391 (12-3-23) in the first set and Loyola Marymount hit .138 (11-7-29). Loyola Marymount recorded the win in set two as it jumped out to an 18-10 lead and coasted to the seven-point win behind six kills from Rankins. LMU, who had five service aces in the set, hit .400 (16-4-30) and USU hit .333 (9-2-21). Utah State opened set three by scoring six of the first eight points and led throughout as it won, 25-19. McArthur had five kills to pace USU as it hit .414 (15-3-29) as compared to a .225 (15-6-40) hitting percentage for LMU. Loyola Marymount used a 5-1 run late in set four to post the three-point win as the Lions hit .190 (12-4-42) and the Aggies hit .194 (14-7-36). In the fifth and final set, McArthur had five kills as Utah State rallied from an early two-point deficit and then held on for the two-point win. USU hit .333 (11-3-24) in the fifth set and LMU hit .286 (10-2-28). Utah State finished the match with a .323 (61-18-133) hitting percentage and Loyola Marymount hit .243 (64-23-169). USU also had 22 more digs (67-45) and four more team blocks (9.5-5.5), while LMU had five more service aces (10-5) and nine more service errors (16-5). Next up for Utah State will be a match against Utah Valley Friday night at 7 p.m. UVU defeated UC Riverside, 3-0, earlier in the day in the second match of the Utah State Invitational. -USU-
