LDS conference aims to connect, uplift singles 31 and older

It’s their biggest event of the year. “Peace Like a River” is the theme for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ 2010 Cache Singles 31 and over conference scheduled to open Thursday, Oct. 14 with a temple session and closes on Sunday evening, Oct. 17 with a special fireside in the Logan Tabernacle.Regional representative Deon Van Dyke says the conference is an easy and enjoyable way to meet people in the same situation. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Wednesday, Van Dyke said one of the highlights comes Friday night with a concert by T-Minus 5 at the USU LDS Institute building.”Saturday they have workshops on different topics, like parenting, scriptures, finances, there will be a dance instruction,” she explained. “We have a high energy dance instructor that will be there, Justin Bayles, and he does a great job of getting people dancing, whether it’s a line dance or a couples dance. He does a great job.”Van Dyke says Saturday also features keynote speaker and songwriter Janice Kapp Perry and her husband Douglas Perry. The workshops and talks will be followed by a dinner and dance with a live band, Wasatch Back. One of the advisors for the group, Don Barringer, estimates there are at least 6,000 singles in the region which includes all of Cache County plus Franklin, Preston and Malad, Idaho.”The whole purpose is to bring great people together, to associate, to have a great time together, but also to worship together,” Barringer said. “There are some people who are a little nervous about getting involved. But really just taking the first jump and hopping in and being involved together is really a great opportunity for them.”Emeritus General Authority F. Melvin Hammond will speak on the topic of “Personal Improvement” in the 6 p.m. Sunday fireside. More information on the conference can be found on the website
