Appreciation night intended for Alzheimer’s caregivers

Thursday the new Cache County Alzheimer’s Coalition presents a Caregiver Appreciation night at 6 p.m. at the Sunshine Terrace. The Bear River Association of Governments (BRAG) formed the coalition with local assisted living facilities, nursing homes and home care agencies. BRAG’s Alzheimer’s Educator is Allison Richman. “We try to do this event each fall,” said Richman. “November is National Caregiver Appreciation Month and we like to set aside a special night for our local caregivers.” Richman said the Alzheimer’s Coalition is a collaboration of agencies including BRAG, Alpine Homecare and Hospice, Sunshine Terrace Foundation, the Cache County Senior Center and Cache Valley Assisted Living. “We have gotten together to provide support for those in our community who are suffering with Alzheimer’s or who are caring for someone is suffering with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. “Providing care sometimes 24 hours a day is an unbelievable responsibility for many and it’s really hard to be positive and provide the understanding and patience needed with somebody with a memory disorder.” Richman said Thursday night’s event includes a special program, “Creating Moments of Joy Through Music” featuring Jennifer Birchell, a music therapist. “We have found that music therapy can really enlighten the mind, awaken some areas for somebody who is struggling with dementia and also people who deal with strokes and other problems within the brain. This will be a special night to help caregivers recognize the role that music can play in their care.”
