It was an early Christmas for Kevin Cornia and his auto collision department at Logan’s Bridgerland Applied Technology College when they learned recently of the awarding of a $50,000 “makeover” school grant. The money, to be used for improvements in BATC’s auto collision program, comes through the Collision Repair Education Foundation and industry supporters. “We’re going to update our program with lots of tools and equipment,” said Cornia, “to help us provide the best education possible. “I believe we will end up painting our shop through donations of paint. Essentially our shop is going to look a lot different and our collision repair program will actually go through a makeover.” Cornia said this is the only school grant awarded nationally each year and the application process was very through. “We put together a virtual tour of our shop, put together a lot of our placement numbers and we went out into the industry to some of our advisories to get feedback from them, as well. There was quite a bit that went into it. We feel very fortunate to be the recipient of this grant.” Cornia said the BATC collision program now submits their equipment and tool needs to the Collision Repair Education Foundation and they will go out into industry and help to provide those back to the program. “The curriculum we teach is called I-Car,” said Cornia, “and right now we have 16 fulltime adult students. They go through the program, get their training and earn I-Car points, which the industry recognizes. That enables them to go out into the workforce and provide collision repair services. “A makeover grant like this allows us to have updated and more sophisticated equipment to better train our students.” Cornia said after improvements are complete the plan calls for a ribbon cutting ceremony sometime next summer with some of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees members on hand to see the finished work first hand.
