LOGAN, Utah — Utah State women’s basketball opened the 2010-11 campaign with a 71-67 loss to Dixie State at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Friday. Utah State falls to 0-1, while Dixie State improves to 1-0. The Red Storm had already defeated Southern Utah and Utah Valley in exhibition games earlier this season. The Aggies are now 1-7 in season openers since the reinstatement during the 2003-04 season. The Aggies had three players reach double-digits in scoring, led by the career-high 13 points by sophomore guard Devyn Christensen. Senior guard/forward Amber White scored 12 for the Aggies, while senior guard LaCale Pringle-Buchanan brought down 11 off the bench. USU got limited action from junior forward Ashlee Brown who struggled with illness all week. Dixie State’s Sheila Adams led all scorers with 22 points, while Johnna Brown led all rebounders with 18 boards, including 16 off the defensive glass. Utah State got off to a red-hot start, scoring 13 of the first 15 points of the match. The Aggies would take as big a lead as 17 points in the first half, taking a 23-6 lead after a Chelsea Burns free throw. The Red Storm would not go quietly, using a 9-0 run to cut the lead down to five 25-20 with less than a minute remaining in the opening half. Two Pringle-Buchanan free throws gave USU a 27-20 lead with 37 seconds left in the half. The teams exchanged threes to end the half and USU entered the lockerroom with a 30-23 advantage. In the first 20 minutes of action, Utah State shot 39.3 percent from the field (11-of-28) and 50 percent from behind the arc (3-of-6). The Aggies shot 71.4 percent from the free-throw line (5-of-7). Dixie State shot 37.5 percent from the field (9-of-24) and 18.2 percent from the three-point line (2-of-11). The Red Storm shot a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line (3-of-3). The second half belonged to Dixie State as the Red Storm out-scored the Aggies 48-37 in the final 20 minutes of the game. Adams scored all 22 of her points in the second half, while Brown added 10 second-half points. After Dixie State took the lead early in the second half, USU fought back and tied the score at 48-48 with a layup by Pringle-Buchanan with 7:27 remaining in the game. DSC had another surge and stretched its lead back to seven points with 2:31 left. The Aggies had one push left in them, cutting the score to 67-65 after back-to-back three pointers by Christensen, but the Red Storm made their free throws down the stretch to hold on to the lead. For the game, Utah State shot 38.8 percent from the field (26-of 67) and 33.3 percent the three-point line (6-of-18). USU struggled from the free throw line, shooting 40.9 percent (9-of-22). Dixie State shot 45.8 percent for the game (22-of-48) and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-21). DSC shot 65.5 percent from the free throw line (19-of-29). The Aggies now hit the road, taking on North Dakota State on Monday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. (MT).
