Heavy snow prompts UDOT to shut down Monte Cristo highway early

Transportation officials have shut down State Road 39 over Monte Cristo Summit in Weber and Rich counties because of heavy snow. Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Vic Saunders says the highway had been set to close for the winter on November 30 but heavy snow Saturday prompted officials to shut it down early. The roadway stretching from milepost 37 in Weber County to milepost 56 in Rich County is now closed to all traffic for the winter. Saunders says it costs too much to keep it open.
