Sen. Hillyard waiting to see what law enforcement has to say about immigration bills

Most of his time will be spent on budget issues because State Senator Lyle Hillyard,R-Logan, is co-chairman of the Executive Appropriations Committee. But Sen. Hillyard says for most of the lawmakers immigration will be the issue with the highest priority when the 2011 session opens on January 24, 2011.ON KVNU’s Crosstalk show Wednesday, Sen. Hillyard said he sees a considerable amount of support for Republican Rep. Steve Sandstrom’s tough Arizona-like immigration bill. As for himself, if a bill comes up for him to vote on, Hillyard will turn to law enforcement.”I’m going to ask them what really helps them,” Sen. Hillyard said. “I know there’s two sides of the story. Some policemen have been concerned that if we make it so strict we’ll drive them underground and them some of these people will be victimized and have no way of getting redress. And that’s not fair either. “Even though they may be here illegally, or not have proper documentation, they still should be protected. So I’m waiting for the police to tell me where they fall on this debate.”Sen. Hillyard says he is confident that what is best for law enforcement is also good for citizens of the state.
