Utah State’s Tai Wesley Named WAC Men’s Basketball Player of The Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s basketball player Tai Wesley has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week it was announced by the league office Monday. Wesley was also named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Dec. 12, an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel. It is the first time this year and third time in his career that Wesley has been named WAC Player of the Week. As for USU Athlete of the Week, it is the seventh time overall that Wesley has garnered USU’s top weekly individual honor. Wesley, a 6-7, 240-pound senior forward from Provo, Utah (Provo HS) led Utah State to a pair of home wins last week against Long Beach State (81-53) and Cal State Bakersfield (77-58). Against the 49ers, Wesley posted his first double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with a season-high six assists. Against the Roadrunners, he recorded another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with three assists. For the week, Wesley averaged 16.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 steals, while shooting 63.2 percent from the field (12-19) and 61.5 percent at the free throw line (8-13). Wesley currently ranks first in the WAC and third in the nation in field goal shooting at 65.3 percent. He also ranks fifth in the league in rebounding (8.0), seventh in scoring (14.7), seventh in blocked shots (1.11) and 14th in assists (2.44). Utah State is 7-2 on the season and returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 18 when it plays at Utah Valley (4-5) at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on CW30. Nominees from other sports for USU Athlete of the Week include: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Junior forward Ashlee Brown (Chandler, Ariz.) had back-to-back double-doubles during the week as Utah State defeated San Francisco (77-71) and lost to Idaho State (64-52) in a pair of home games. Against the Dons, she scored 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals. She then had 17 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks against the Bengals.
