UPDATE: Rollover accident blocks I-15 traffic in Box Elder County

Southbound traffic on Interstate 15 in Box Elder County was diverted for several hours Friday night following a rollover accident involving two semi trailers and a Honda Civic hatchback. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, the Civic, driven by Jeremy Gage, and first semi (hauling doubles) were in the right lane. The second semi, driven by Brent Swainston, was in a left lane. Gage passed the first semi. As soon as he passed the semi he started to take the exit and lost control of his vehicle, spinning back in front of the first semi where the driver side of Gage’s Civic impacted the left front corner of the first semi. This impact caused the Civic to spin around and across the freeway to the left where the passenger side was impacted by the second semi. This second impact caused the Civic to go back across the freeway to the right where it came to rest in the grassy part of the gore area between the exit lane and mainflow. Upon impact, the second semi rolled onto it’s left side blocking all lanes. The second semi was fully loaded at 78,000 lbs hauling potatoes. All vehicles were towed. Gage was extricated from his Civic and transported to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to be ok. The driver of the first semi was ok and not transported. Swainston and his passenger, Cheryl Liinford, were both transported and then released from the hospital with minor injuries.
