Man killed by police at Mormon temple in South Jordan ID’d

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – West Jordan police are identifying the man shot and killed by an officer outside a Mormon Temple on Christmas Day as Daniel Pogue of South Jordan. Police say the 54-year-old Pogue was shot after failing to drop a loaded pump-style shotgun. Officers went to the temple Saturday after a 911 caller reported Pogue was wandering around the grounds with a gun. In a news release Monday, police say Pogue was also carrying a machete and was chopping up the fence surrounding the temple. Confronted by officers, Pogue first hid behind his car and then ran with the gun toward a group of people. Police say the officer feared Pogue would harm the bystanders, and fired a single shot. Pogue was pronounced dead at the scene.
