Olsen: ‘we need to reach out and embrace’ legal immigrants

After a public hearing on Tuesday, the Logan Municipal Council voted unanimously to support the Utah Compact. New Council Chairman Herm Olsen, who proposed a resolution supporting the document, says what the Utah Compact will hopeflly do is keep immigration discussions on a civil level when the Utah legislature meets this later this month. “There are thousands of legal immigrants who contribute to our community,” Olsen says, “and we really need to reach out and endorse and embrace them when we can. “They are a part of us and we are a part of them. That is a good thing, a positive thing. Let’s keep it on an upscale tone instead of a bashing tone.” Olsen says imigration issues should be handled by the federal government and he hopes the legislature wil not spend a lot of time and money on issues it cannot control. For example, Olsen, who is a local attorney, says you don’t get a passport from the state but rather it has to come from the federal government.
