Logan council chair says city is in good shape

Three members of the Logan Municipal Council have terms expiring this year and two of those, Jay Monson and Laraine Swenson, say they will not seek re-election. New Council Chairman Herm Olsen has not yet decided whether or not to run for a second four-year term.Olsen says those who are thinking about running for council should know that it is a very complex job. He says Logan has millions of dollars of un-funded needs and yet the city is in good financial shape.”Communities across this country are in desperate shape now because of the whole economy downturn deal,” Olsen says. “Logan City is okay, we’re in the black. “That doesn’t mean we’re flush and we’ve got a huge surplus, but it we’re not going begging either.” On KVNU’s Crosstalk show last week, Olsen said we need to do more to help the air pollution problems that come with winter inversions. Driving less, using the Cache Valley Transit District buses more and refraining from letting vehicles idle so much are some of Olsen’s suggestions.
