Locals ‘freezin’ for a reason’ at this year’s polar bear plunge events

Hyrum Dam and the Bear Lake State Park Marina are getting ready to host a crowd of swimmers with blue lips and chattering teeth. The 6th Annual Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Utah takes place Jan. 21 and Jan. 22 at Hyrum Dam. Participants bring pledges and donations for Special Olympics and then jump into the dam, surrounded by ice and snow. There will be three opportunities to jump in Hyrum. Participants can take the plunge at 12 p.m. Jan. 21, midnight Jan. 21 or 12 p.m. Jan. 22. Registration can be done online through the Special Olympic’s website, www.sout.org. The Bear Lake Monster Polar Plunge at the marina takes place at noon Jan. 22. Participants must register and make a donation or sponsorship of at least $30, which goes directly to Primary Children’s Medical Center. Those who make a donation get a sweater after the jump. Participants can register at www.bearlake.org or starting at 10 a.m. the day of the jump. – rachel@cvdaily.com
