Quitting tobacco is the second most popular resolution each New Year and the Bear River Health Department is offering helpful hints for those trying to quit for the new year or any time of year. Most importantly, people can call Utah Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUITNOW or visit www.utah.quitnet.com for hep and all services are both free and confidential. Some suggestions: write down the reasons you want to quit and review them regularly, tell your friends and family of your quit day, stock up on sugarless gum, cinnamon sticks, carrot sticks, hard candy, etc. Other tips include decide on a plan and know how you will avoid triggers, practice saying “No thank you, I don’t smoke” and set up a support system. The health department has other tips, such as avoid people and places where you are tempted to smoke, and keep your hands busy with exercises or hobbies to help distract you from the urge to smoke.
